I
was completely wrong about Fernandez's domination of the Phillies
this evening. I was oh so wrong. But, I was oh so right!!
Remember when I said, "The Phillies best chance in this one is to get Fernandez's pitch count up and get into the Marlins' bullpen early. Then, hope that their own bullpen can do their job and shut the Marlins down." ? Keep that in mind.
The Phils handed Fernandez his first loss tonight, shelling him for 8 hits and 6 earned runs in just 4 innings. 4 INNINGS. Get to the bullpen early? CHECK.
A.J. Burnett struggled with his command tonight, but overall it was a pretty good start for him. Besides the 6 walks in 4.1 innings he only allowed 2 runs to score.
So, the bullpen had to close out the remaining 4.2 innings with 4 runs of wiggle room. The collective efforts of Jake Diekman, Mario Hollands, Antonio Bastardo, and Jonathon Papelbon allowed a combined 1 run and 2 hits, while striking out 5 Marlins at the tail end of the ballgame. Bullpen do its job and shut down the Marlins? CHECK.
And thus, the Phillies win 6-3, while facing the Marlins ace no less. Great game for the Phils, but more importantly, great call by yours truly. I put the keys to the game out there, and when they are executed the Phils get a Dub. Coincidence? Oh no. Baseball Genius? The credentials sure are starting to add up on that front.#WorldSeriesHereWeCome
